Sticking over tiles in the bathroom: the right way to do it!

The apartment can be as beautiful as it is, but if the bathroom is tiled in a boring or very unaesthetic way, this greatly affects the impression of the living space. However, since the housing market is highly competitive these days, especially in big cities, compromises often have to be made with regard to the bathroom. However, no one has to put up with unsightly tiles, after all, it is possible to simply paste over the tiles. For this purpose, neither high sums of money have to be invested nor great craftsmanship is required. If you move out of the apartment one day, the adhesive foils can be removed again without leaving any residue. But what are the basic options for pasting over the tiles? Die-hard DIY fans can buy high-quality adhesive film from a roll, cut it to size themselves and then stick it on. In terms of design and color, of course, the creativity can be completely free rein. However, it is much more convenient to use special tile stickers that are already available in the right format. How to proceed when pasting over the tiles and what to consider in principle, explains the following article.

These materials are needed

. The range of stickers for tiles is extremely extensive. In some cases, however, it is already sufficient to stick only one row of the tiles with a great motif or pattern. In addition, tile stickers are also available, which enhance the existing tile color with an appropriate motif. So-called adhesive tiles, on the other hand, often have a strong structuring and are thus also suitable for pasting over existing structured tiles. In addition to the stickers, tile pictures or yard goods, grease remover or tile cleaner, a spray bottle, cutter, felt squeegee, possibly adhesive solvent, a metal ruler and a cutting board or cutting mat are also necessary for the overstick. If there are damages, cracks or drill holes on some tiles, these damages should be removed in advance.

Preparations for gluing over

. In order for the beautification of the tiles to be successful, good planning is required. In the first step, it is necessary to accurately measure the size of the tiles. If larger motifs, consisting of several parts, are to be glued, it is also necessary to measure the dimension of the joints. After that, the number of necessary foils is determined. In addition, it is important that the right material is available for the project. For example, if floor tiles are to be embellished, film in a durable material can not be dispensed with. Even if special tile foils are purchased, it may well be necessary to cut them to size in some places. The right tools for this are a cutting board or cutting mat, a ruler and a cutter with a sharp blade. Both measuring and marking and cutting must be exceedingly precise, so that the film covers ideally and does not protrude into the joints.

How the gluing works

. When pasting over the tiles, you should always proceed from top to bottom so that the water removed does not undercut or wash over the stickers that have already been applied. The first step is to put a little water in a spray bottle and add a drop of detergent. The tile to be covered is then sprayed with the mixture over the entire surface. The sticker is now removed from its backing and its adhesive side is also sprayed. After that, the tile sticker can be applied to the intended tile. The positioning can still be easily changed due to the existing water film. Once the sticker is perfectly in place, another spraying follows. The sticker is then held in the middle so that the water can be spread out with the felt squeegee from the center to the outside. The entire surface is then also processed again with the felt squeegee neatly from the inside out. The moisture and the spread water are dabbed off with a paper towel. Now the film must adhere well. This process can take from two to 24 hours, depending on the temperature and the material in question. If after this time, edges of the stickers should still stick out, these are to be warmed up with the help of a hair dryer and pressed on again.

Alternatives for sticking over the tiles with foil

. However, old tiles can be pasted over not only with foil. If this uncomplicated variant is out of the question, it is also possible, for example, to paste over the existing with new tiles. However, for this to happen, it is absolutely necessary to have the appropriate load-bearing capacity. Old tiles on the floor can also be covered in this way. In addition, wallpaper is basically also suitable for making unsightly tiles disappear. This is then attached to the tiles with wallpaper paste. However, the substrate must be treated accordingly in advance so that the paste adheres really securely to the tiles. Tiles can also be covered with vinyl. This requires the use of contact adhesive, which has the advantage that its application turns out absolutely safe and uncomplicated. In addition, the vinyl flooring cannot slip on the tiles, because the adhesion is extremely strong due to the contact adhesive. Fig: Brett_Hondow/pixabay.com
