Mount sinks and washbasins at the ideal height

The bathroom at home is a place of rest, relaxation and comfort. Regardless of whether it is the shower, the bathtub or even the sink: It is important that all elements are well thought out and easily accessible. However, this requirement is often problematic, especially in the case of the washbasin or washstand. If they are not installed at the right height, daily use is perceived as inconvenient and complicated. Thus, the time spent at the sink can not be relaxing for anyone. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to various elements when installing the sink at the right height. Then the bathroom comfort can be optimized to a great extent.

Orientation: the DIN standard

. If the installation of washstands and washbasins is carried out by a specialist company, for example in hotels or public areas, the DIN standard 68935 forms a helpful orientation. This states that the installation of washbasins in rented apartments or public areas must take place at a height of 85 to 95 centimeters. The upper edge of the washbasin serves as a benchmark for the height of the washbasin. Therefore, it does not matter whether it is a washbasin or a sink, which is installed directly on the wall. It is advisable to make the installation height dependent on this standard in principle. However, this, of course, does not take into account individual user requirements. Optimally, when installing the sink so must also consider the individual user.

Determining the appropriate height for the sink

. Of course, the DIN standard presented was chosen wisely. It represents the average value of the different average body heights. After all, the individual height of users is decisive for the optimal height of the washbasin. According to a rule of thumb, half of the body height in centimeters gives the perfect height at which the upper edge of the sink should end. Therefore, if the sink is used by only one person, the mounting height can be determined relatively easily. However, according to this, it is a little more complicated to determine the ideal sink height for a family. A good way in this case is to calculate the average. So, the half heights of the people are added together and then divided by the number of family members to get the average.

Height is crucial

. However, such a compromise does not necessarily mean that all people could live comfortably and well with it. If the body sizes turn out to be very different, the average value can lead to the fact that the use of the washbasin is made more difficult for everyone. However, even in this case, there is an ideal solution for sanitary rooms. For example, it is possible to install a washstand or sink, respectively, which can be adjusted in height. Thus, the height can always be adjusted to the individual user. However, this solution is only conditionally comfortable. It is more recommended - if there is enough space - to install two washbasins at different heights.

Special case: wheelchair users and children

. Adjusting the sink to the height of a child is usually not particularly purposeful. After all, the little ones are in a continuous growth. This measure is advisable only if it is carried out in places where there are constantly many children of the same age, for example, in kindergartens or schools. However, the sink height in the bathroom at home is not affected. It is usually sufficient here to provide a step stool for the child. However, if the washbasin is also to be used by a wheelchair user, the situation is different. In this case, the most important thing is that the washbasin can be moved under with the wheelchair. The top edge must not be higher than 80 centimeters. In this scenario, a sink that is electrically adjustable is again a good solution - at least if the bathroom is also used by other people.

The necessary distances around the washbasin

. Not only the height of the sink is regulated by the DIN standard 68935, but also what distances should be given next to and in front of the sink. The sides of the sink should leave 65 centimeters each on the right and left - measured from the center of the sink - to accommodate other fixtures and ensure a certain freedom of movement. The standard provides for a more generous area in front of the sink, which is between 100 and 145 centimeters. However, in narrow and very small bathrooms, this requirement can hardly be implemented. However, as a rule, these dimensions are included at least in barrier-free buildings, so that their compliance there is not a problem.

In addition, it depends on the installation

. In many cases, washbasins are installed by mounting them directly on the wall. So, in this case, the height can basically be chosen completely freely. However, the mounting height is very important for models that have a base cabinet. Also, the location of the existing connections in the bathroom must be taken into account. If drilling into the tiles is to be avoided, a basin is needed that is firmly mounted on a base cabinet - that is, a so-called washbasin. It is necessary that the washbasin is placed centrally in front of the drain. In addition, there must be two angle valves to connect the faucets. If it is an electrically height-adjustable washbasin, a power connection is also necessary. The drain height must also be taken into account with regard to the possible washbasin height. If it is an eccentric valve, it is necessary that the upper edge of the washbasin is positioned at least 32 centimeters above the drain. Photo: spa-ambiente.com
