Painting the bathroom - what to look for

Those who are looking for an alternative to the classic tiles on the walls of their bathroom, are well advised with painted walls. However, in damp rooms it is very important to choose the right color, so that this can already effectively prevent the formation of water stains and mold. Depending on the size of the bathroom, painting should take about one to two hours. The tools and materials needed - depending on the individual circumstances - consist of tile primer, tile varnish, damp paint, roller and flat brush. What to pay attention to in general when it comes to painting the bathroom and what procedure is recommended, shows the following article.

The right wall paint for damp rooms

. Nowadays, boring white tiles in the bathroom no longer have to be - there are numerous design ideas for the bathroom available, which can be easily implemented, whether with natural stones, tiles or painted walls. The latter alternative is characterized by a particularly large number of varied possibilities. If it is about a wall color for the bathroom, blue still represents the undisputed classic, because with this color associations with the sea are directly awakened. This connection can be additionally strengthened by a decoration in the maritime style. However, green and earth tones are also excellent for designing the walls in the bathroom, as they have a relaxing and calming effect. Those who want to give their bathroom a more modern touch are well advised to use the color gray. If the size of the bathroom turns out to be very small and perhaps a window has to be dispensed with, light wall colors or even classic white should be chosen as a matter of principle. In large, light-flooded bathrooms, however, exciting contrasts can be created by accents or individual walls in darker shades. However, personal taste is not the only decisive factor when it comes to choosing colors for the home wellness oasis. Regardless of which shade is chosen, specific requirements must also be met by the wall paint. This is because conventional emulsion paint is not able to withstand the frequently changing temperatures and high humidity in the bathroom air in the long term. However, the so-called silicate paints, which are specially designed for use in damp rooms, are suitable. These have a higher breathability and can effectively prevent the formation of mold. In addition, they can also be scrubbed off without causing any damage. Thus, when showering, no one has to worry if the walls come into contact with water splashes.

The preparation

. Before painting the bathroom, make sure that the surface is dry, clean, load-bearing and also free of grease. If there are still chalky residues or glue paint on the substrate, these should be washed off in the first step. If the substrate is absorbent or sandy, it can be consolidated with the help of a special primer. For masking should always resort to painter's masking tape of high quality, in addition, do not refrain from carefully cover the furniture and plumbing.

Painting

For how the paint is then finally applied to the wall of the bathroom, various options are available, for example, spraying, rolling or just painting. The first step is always to paint the edges, corners and places that are difficult to reach. A small roller or radiator brush is well suited for this. The paint roller should then be lightly moistened and dipped halfway into the paint. Then carefully roll the roller on the wall, proceeding in a crisscross pattern. This means that the roller is first passed from top to bottom evenly in two to three lanes, then it is distributed crosswise. In the last step, the roller is again lightly rolled from top to bottom. In order to avoid visible marks, it is advisable not to interrupt the application of the paint on a continuous surface. If you need to pause in between, wrap the roller or brush tightly with plastic wrap to prevent the utensils from drying or the paint from curing on them.

The cleanup and drying

. Once the painting is finished, the work utensils still need to be carefully cleaned and dried. Only warm water is used for this purpose. The painter's masking tape should be removed, and the same applies to the covers of the furniture and other bathroom equipment. However, it should be noted that the drying time of damp paint is a little longer than for conventional wall paint. Ideally, so pass one to two days until the bathroom should be used again without restrictions.

Paint over existing tiles

If the existing tiles in the bathroom are to be retained during the redesign, there is also the option of painting them. In this way, even appearances of age can be wonderfully covered. Special tile varnish is used for painting the tiles. Before this is applied to the tiles, the substrate must also be carefully cleaned and possibly treated with a primer. Photo: spa-ambiente.de
