Painting tiles - cheap and effective

If the tiles in the bathroom or kitchen are still intact, but nevertheless simply no longer correspond to the current zeitgeist or personal taste, it is not mandatory to replace them. There is also the attractive possibility of painting the existing tiles, so that the walls in the kitchen or bathroom again get a friendly, modern look. The special tile color is available in numerous variants, so that the right option can be found for every taste. How best to proceed to effectively and inexpensively make the tiles shine in new splendor, explains the following article.

Preparation of the joints

. If the existing tiles in the kitchen or bathroom are to be painted, the old joints are also painted over in the process. This has the advantage that the surface, which was uniformly painted with the tile color, can later be cleaned extremely easily. However, in the first step it is necessary to check all the joints. If they are damaged or loose, they must be scraped out and renewed or repaired with grout or a repair kit. Before painting the tiles, allow sufficient time for the joints to dry completely. The special tile varnish does not adhere to silicone - old silicone joints must therefore be thoroughly scraped out before painting. Once the tile varnish has dried after painting is complete, the silicone joints can then be renewed.

Removal of fittings and sockets

. In order for the paint to be applied evenly to the tiles, the fixtures must be removed. If there are accessories, such as towel rails, or fixtures that cannot be removed, carefully mask them off using painter's masking tape. In addition, the coverings of sockets should also be removed. In some cases, it is also useful to completely remove the sink from the wall.

Cleaning the tiles

. Then, before painting the tiles, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface, because the tile varnish adheres perfectly only to a grease-free and clean base. As a rule, however, cleaning with standard soap or vinegar cleaner is absolutely sufficient. Special tile cleaner is also available. In any case, it is important to proceed carefully, so that no remnants of adhesive hooks or grease, lime or soap are left on the tiles.

Roughening the tiles

. The manufacturer's instructions for the particular tile varnish should be studied thoroughly. Depending on the particular product, it may be necessary to roughen the tiles in advance before applying the primer. Sandpaper with a grain size of 240 or a sanding fleece is well suited for this purpose. The dust created by sanding must be removed with a damp cloth made of microfiber before painting. Also, the tiles must dry completely before starting the application of the product.

Application of the primer

. The actual painting of the tiles begins with the application of the primer. This must be mixed well before being applied briskly and evenly to the existing tiles using a fine foam roller. Before applying the paint, it is necessary for the primer to dry completely and harden. For the drying time in this case should be planned between 16 and 24 hours, the exact details can be found in the manufacturer's instructions.

Painting the tiles

. Once the primer is completely dry, the first coat of tile varnish is applied. For this purpose, a hard foam roller should be used, which has open pores. After mixing, the tile varnish should be applied as quickly as possible, as the working time is limited. Ideally, the paint itself should be applied evenly and thinly. Before the second coat of varnish is applied to the tiles, the first coat must again dry thoroughly - this drying phase usually lasts twelve hours. After this time, the second and final layer of varnish is applied to the tiles. Also with this layer it is necessary to work evenly and quickly. Striking motifs or dark initial tiles are then completely covered by the second layer of varnish. However, if the tiles have a relief-like surface or a haptic pattern, these will still be visible under the varnish. Uneven surfaces can also be more or less prominent, depending on the viewing angle and the incidence of light. The tile varnish then takes quite a long time to cure completely, namely up to three days - depending on the product in question. So during this time, the room can hardly be used as usual, otherwise the surface of the varnish could be damaged.

Attaching the dismantled elements

. Once the tile varnish is fully cured, the previously removed faucets and sockets can be reattached. Now is also the right time to renew removed silicone grout. Further information: Fig: PublicDomainPictures/pixabay.com
