Repair sink yourself with these tips

If scratches or damage appear in the ceramic of the bathroom sink, they can usually be repaired without much effort. All that is needed is a touch-up pen or a corresponding repair kit. With these tools, the superficial damage can be sealed again without much effort. Before starting to repair the sink on your own, however, it is necessary to examine the damage a little more closely to determine whether it is a fine hairline crack, scratch or spalling. If there is a spall in the ceramic, a suitable repair kit is needed. A touch-up pencil, on the other hand, is used to repair scratches and fine hairline cracks. Those who want to repair their sink themselves, will find in the following article a practical guide to do so - both for the repair with the help of a touch-up pencil, and for the repair with a repair kit.

Repairing chipping on the sink

.

Preparation of the substrate

. To carry out a repair of spalling on the sink, an appropriate repair kit is used. The first step is to clean the area of the sink that needs to be repaired. For this purpose, a mixture of water and leaching agent is used, which is applied to the ceramic with the help of a sponge. Safety goggles and gloves should be worn during this step. Greasy areas must be cleaned particularly thoroughly and then carefully rubbed dry.

Application of the filler

. Basically, the repair kits available on the market already contain all the components needed to repair damage to the ceramic. They thus include sandpaper, hardener, filler, putty and a little varnish. When using them, make sure that the room is extensively ventilated during the work, as the respiratory tract may be irritated by the putty. In addition, protective goggles, face masks and gloves must be worn when handling the putty. The putty is opened with a screwdriver and a small amount is applied to a suitable base. The hardener is then added to this in a ratio of 30:1. The next step is to mix the two components thoroughly. The mixture is then applied to the affected area in the sink. As it dries, the compound sinks a little further into the sink, which is why it is possible to be generous when filling. The amount used also determines the duration of curing on the ceramic. This can be between 30 minutes and several hours.

Sanding the putty

Now the putty must be ground off. Before doing so, however, make sure that it has already dried completely. It is recommended to use light-colored sandpaper to ensure that there is no discoloration in the sink after the repair. After sanding is done, carefully wipe the affected area and feel with your fingers to see if the surface is smooth and comfortable.

Spraying the repair spray

. Completing the repair of chipping on the ceramic is the spraying of a repair spray. Also at this stage of work is not to do without the already mentioned protective clothing. The spray can must be shaken well and the spray then applied evenly to the repaired areas. Ideally, the repair spray on the sink is then left to dry overnight.

Sanding the affected area

. For repairing finer damage, scratches or cracks on the sink, the use of a touch-up pen is recommended. The first step is to sand the areas to be repaired using sandpaper. This will ensure that the ceramic no longer has any sharp edges.

Mending with the touch-up pencil

The touch-up pencil is then applied. Protective clothing should also be worn during this process. Mouth protection, safety goggles and gloves are recommended. The paint is then applied to the damage in the sink using the integrated brush. This seals scratches and cracks on the sink surface. Water can then no longer enter them. Depending on which product is used, drying times can vary greatly. Therefore, always take into account the manufacturer's instructions, which can be found on the packaging. Once the paint is completely dry, it can be sanded again. However, care must be taken to ensure that the varnish is not completely removed from the surface. The area must then still be wiped. After that, the scratches or cracks on the surface should hardly be visible. The touch-up pens and repair kits can also be used to repair other damage to ceramic elements in the bathroom, such as the bathtub. Photo: spa-ambiente.de
