Protection against Corona infection: hand washing and hygiene

There is no longer any doubt that the coronavirus has arrived in Germany. The reports seem to be coming in almost by the hour. That's why it's more important than ever these days to make personal and household hygiene an absolute priority. Above all, this includes proper hand washing and a hygienic cleaning routine - especially in the bathroom. There is a great deal of uncertainty around the world about the new type of virus known as Corona. People are naturally asking themselves how they can protect themselves from contracting the virus. The following article shows what hygiene measures are now useful in your own household.

Recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute

. In order to protect against infection with the coronavirus in daily interaction, the Robert Koch Institute, or RKI for short, advises people to pay particular attention to adequate hygiene when washing their hands, to observe sneezing and coughing etiquette, and to keep the necessary distance from people who are ill. With regard to hygiene in the home, the RKI or other health authorities have not published any specific precautionary measures. In principle, however, the conventional hygiene measures that are always taken when illness is suspected in the household should be implemented. After all, a spread of viruses and germs in the own four walls should be limited.

Hygienic cleaning of the household: What cleaning products are necessary?

Normally, the normal cleaning and cleaning products are absolutely sufficient for hygiene in the home. There is no advantage in using special cleaning cloths or detergents from the supermarket, which are supposed to have a special antibacterial effect. Cleaning can also not be replaced by the use of disinfectants, because they do not remove the existing dirt. Therefore, these should be used in the apartment only in exceptions or after the advice of the health department or the doctor. Instead, it is much more important and useful to use different rags and cloths in the toilet and the bathroom and kitchen. After use, they should be washed at least 60 degrees in the washing machine. They should not be used more than once. To prevent bacteria from multiplying on the cloths and rags themselves, they should always be dried quickly and sufficiently, and not stored wet or damp.

Right washing of textiles

. A large number of people still swear by washing at 60 degrees, so that bacteria and germs are killed. This is the right way and should be used especially for critical textiles, such as underwear and bed linen, washcloths, towels, dishcloths and cleaning cloths. However, in the case of normal garments, washing can also be carried out at lower temperatures. In any case, the use of hygienic rinse agents should be avoided. The washing machine should not be neglected in all hygiene measures, because the warm, moist climate that prevails in the machine provides a perfect breeding ground for the spread of bacteria. At least once a week, the washing machine should therefore be turned on in the hot wash cycle at 60 degrees.

Right airing against viruses

. It is important to air the rooms regularly. This is because it promotes an optimal indoor climate and reduces the risk of mold growth. Through shock ventilation, the risk of infection with viruses can be reduced. This is because the concentration of viruses in the air of a room can rapidly increase if fresh air is not allowed in. When there is an optimal room climate, there is also the advantage that the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth do not dry out as quickly - so the body's immune system can better fight off viruses.

Right hand washing

. To reduce the risk of infection with viruses, careful hand washing is an absolute must. However, this should be done in a structured manner. If hand washing does not take enough time, then viruses and germs will not be completely removed. Therefore, the following steps should be followed for thorough and hygienic hand washing: Hands are held under running water. The temperature of the water does not matter. This is followed by thorough soaping of the back of the hand, the inner surfaces, the thumb, the spaces between the hands and the fingertips. Also the fingernails should not be neglected. Approximately 20 to 30 seconds should take the process of hand washing.. Subsequently, the hands are rinsed under running water. Then follows a proper drying of the hands, also in the spaces between the fingers. At home, it is advisable that each family member uses his own towel.
