Simple tips for a sustainable bathroom

Every person consumes an average of around 123 liters of water per day. Most of this water ends up in the bathroom drain. However, the amount of energy consumed in the bathroom every day should not be underestimated, for example for heating hot water, heating or light sources. In order to realize savings in these areas, thermostatic or heating fixtures represent a sensible solution. However, a sustainable bathroom is also supported by the use of sensor fittings or special shower heads to save water. The energy efficiency classes of the light sources in the bathroom should also be scrutinized. It is recommended that only the A++ and A+ categories be used. It is also worth switching to products from the natural cosmetics sector and pursuing a zero waste strategy in the bathroom. Also, conventional detergents, which contain a variety of harmful substances, can be easily replaced with homemade remedies and environmentally friendly products.

Daily bathroom use: save more water

. The high consumption of water in the bathroom is undoubtedly the biggest environmental sin. Caused this in most cases, however, not even consciously. Basically, a full bath should only be an exception in everyday life and instead it is better to take a shower. However, showering also consumes around 12 liters of water per minute. To effectively reduce this water consumption, both the duration of the shower should be shortened and a shower head should be used that features water-saving technology. Such shower heads are equipped with economy seals, which lead to a reduction in the flow rate of water. This function is also available for washbasin faucets. However, water can also be saved in the sink area by equipping the faucets with sensor technology. The flow of water thus stops automatically when it is no longer necessary, so that in the long term the environment is protected to a large extent.

Reduce consumption of energy in the bathroom

. In a sustainable bathroom should also not refrain from installing thermostats on the shower faucet and heating. With modern heating thermostats, not only can the current heating temperature always be kept track of, but it also allows for targeted control. A strong heating of the bathroom should be made anyway only if it concerns strongly frequented day times - in the night a heating of the bathroom is not necessary at all. This type of energy saving in the bathroom is particularly convenient when integrated into a smart home system. In addition, shower thermostats ensure that the water temperature is continuously maintained during showering. This not only saves water, but also reduces the consumption of energy, as it is no longer necessary to wait a long time for colder or warmer temperatures. In addition, the bathroom can be illuminated in a particularly energy-efficient manner if light sources in energy efficiency classes A++ or A+ are selected. In addition, more environmentally conscious energy behavior is also greatly supported by coupling the lighting with a smart home system.

Avoidance of aggressive chemicals and waste

. However, the measures that can be taken today to realize sustainable bathroom use go far beyond energy and water savings. After all, bathrooms produce a particularly large amount of waste, both in the form of plastic and other waste products that enter the water cycle. In order to use as little plastic in the bathroom as is humanly possible, switching to toxin-free cleaning products and natural cosmetics is recommended. These cosmetic products contain fewer chemicals that pollute the environment and are usually free of plastic. In addition, it is advisable to use solid soap instead of liquid soap in the future, as these are often available in environmentally friendly paper packaging. Nowadays, solid soap can even be found for hair, so that liquid shampoo from plastic bottles can also be dispensed with when washing hair. The toothbrush can also contribute to the reduction of plastic waste. To this end, toothbrushes made of wood should be used. The products used to keep the bathroom clean and pure contain, for the most part, numerous ingredients that are harmful to the environment. The environment is highly polluted by these. Thus, in a sustainable bathroom, these hardly have a raison d'être, rather ecological cleaning products should be used. In addition, cleaners can be made from citric acid, water and vinegar essence. Disposable products should also be avoided for cleaning the bathroom - much more recommendable are cleaning textiles that can be washed without any problems and thus used again and again.

Prefer high quality

. First and foremost, a sustainable bathroom is characterized by a focus on durability. The furnishings should therefore impress with their high quality, so that conversions or replacement of the furniture will only be necessary in the rarest of cases. Accordingly, it comes down to forward-looking planning. A sustainable choice is, for example, furniture that has an IBU or FSC seal. Walls can also be designed with the environment in mind if natural paints, lime or clay plasters are applied to them. These do not emit any harmful gases into the air and are also produced under environmentally friendly conditions. Regarding the lastingness however also the general space planning has a large meaning. In order not to have to make a rebuilding in the age, which becomes very resource-expensive, should be set for instance immediately on a shower, which is as free as possible from plastic and at the same level as the floor. Ergonomic washbasins and barrier-free access, for example to the toilet, should also be considered in this context at an early stage. Photo: spa-ambiente.de
