Washbasin types and their differences

One of the elements of furniture that are present in almost all bathrooms is, of course, the sink. This sanitary element is available in many different materials and designs. For those who want to buy a new sink, the decision for one of the numerous models is not so easy. After all, there are many different factors to consider, such as the height of the sink or its material. What types of washbasins are basically available, where their individual differences lie and what should also be considered in the context of the purchase, explains the following article.

The modern solution: countertop washbasins

. Sanitary and bathroom suppliers offer washbasins in a large number of sizes and shapes. Modern bathrooms are nowadays particularly often equipped with column washbasins or the combination of washbasin base cabinet and countertop washbasin. The countertop washbasins thus enjoy an extremely high popularity among style-conscious bathroom owners. These models consist in wash bowls, which are equipped with a siphon connection - again, they are available in different sizes and shapes. They can be positioned, for example, on a vanity top of sufficient width or a vanity cabinet. Some models are available without a drilled hole, while others have a hole for a faucet. If a countertop washbasin without a drilled hole is chosen, the faucet is mounted on the wall behind the basin.

The classic: suspended washbasin

. In Europe, the classics in the bathroom undoubtedly represent the suspended washbasins. Their design corresponds to a standard rectangular shape, however, today you can find deviations from it, for example, in the form of elongated or oval hand basins. This type of washbasins can be used completely individually, as they can be found in a large number of different variants. The main advantage of suspended washbasins is that they are firmly attached to the wall of the bathroom. However, this is also accompanied by the fact that the shape of the bathroom furniture must be adapted to the particular shape of the sink.

The combination: built-in washbasins

. In most cases, the purchase of built-in washbasins takes place immediately with the base cabinet, which is ideal for it. On this, the washbasins are then placed on the upper edge or they are directly recessed into the base cabinet. This type of sink is recommended especially for bathrooms, which should have a uniform and harmonious design in the area of furniture. Not to be neglected is also the fact that the base cabinet creates a lot of valuable storage space in the bathroom. However, if the sink is integrated into a series of furniture, the choice of different models is usually somewhat more limited.

The miracle of space: column washbasin

. For bathrooms that turn out rather narrow and small, column washbasins are the ideal solution. The look of the bathroom can benefit greatly from a modern column washbasin, as these models always act as a special design highlight. However, when buying a column washbasin, it must also be taken into account that hardly any additional storage space can be realized under the sink.

The family solution: double washbasin

. If the bathroom is often used by several family members at the same time, the purchase of a practical double washbasin should be considered. These are available both with the matching base cabinet for a corresponding cabinet installation or for mounting on the wall. Compared with single washbasins, however, the purchase price for the double washbasin shows relatively high, in addition, of course, the bathroom must provide sufficient space for such an expansive model.

For small bathrooms: corner washbasin

. Due to its extremely space-saving properties, the corner washbasin is convincing, which is why it fits perfectly in guest toilets or very small bathrooms. However, this type of washbasin has a very limited area. That is why it often happens that water splashes out of the washbasin and drips onto the floor.

The materials of the washbasins

. However, washbasins have long had great differences not only in terms of their various types. In the field of materials, too, there are many different alternatives to choose from. Which material should be chosen for the new sink depends primarily on the other furnishings, usage habits, bathroom frequency and the available budget.

Ceramic

. The most classic material used for washbasins is bathroom ceramics, because washbasins were made exclusively of this material until recently. This is hardly surprising, after all, ceramic is shown to be extremely durable and robust. Nowadays, moreover, the ceramic is often provided with an additional nano-coating, which makes cleaning the washbasin much easier. However, depending on their shape and individual equipment, ceramic washbasins are also shown to be very price-intensive, which, however, is in turn compensated by their long durability.

Acrylic

. The resistance to breakage of washbasins made of acrylic is shown to be very high, in addition, there is a wide variety of different colors, shapes and sizes. The weight of acrylic washbasins is shown to be very low, which makes them particularly suitable to be mounted on walls that have low load-bearing capacity or to be used as countertop washbasins. However, in direct comparison with ceramic washbasins, the durability of acrylic models turns out to be lower. A typical sign of wear of the washbasins made of acrylic consists, for example, in a dull appearance of the surface, in addition, the material is generally less durable than ceramics.

Glass

In the trade, however, for some time now, glass washbasins can be found more and more often, whether in special shades, satin or clear optics. The glass used in the washbasins is usually shatterproof and sometimes tempered safety glass. In most cases, glass washbasins are offered in the form of built-in washbasins. The disadvantage of the material is that lime can be increasingly deposited on the glass, which is why cleaning turns out to be quite costly.

The perfect height of the sink

. So that the comfort of daily bathroom use does not fall by the wayside, it is also important that the sink is positioned at the perfect height. The rule of thumb for this is to halve your own height to determine the ideal height for the sink. However, if the sink is to be used by different people whose heights differ greatly, always use the smallest height as a guide - plus an extra centimeter or two for the ideal installation height.
